Development work can be performed in laboratory, pilot and to full scale production. Lipid analysis and general characterisation such as moisture, viscosity, spinn test, lipid class distribution and polar/neutral lipid content.

Fractionation & Precipitation

Crude extracts from plants, eggs, marine, algae and cereals contains different lipid classes and impurities.

 

In order to remove impurities, fractionation and precipitation principles are used.

 

This area also includes adsorption techniques where specific components are to be removed or isolated.

Separation & Adsorption

These operations can be performed up to full scale. Large scale HPLC column purification is also used where high demands for ultra-high purity.

Extraction

The principle for isolation of lipids from plant, animal and marine sources is done by means of extraction.

 

Lipid Systems uses sustainable and non-hazardous solvents classified in Class 1 according to FDA pharmaceutical nomenclature.

 

Extraction from solid’s capacity ranges from laboratory to pilot scale (10-20 Kg end product).

 

Liquid-liquid extraction is done in same manner using simple procedures. Lipid Systems AB does not use petroleum based solvents in production. This means processing conditions without negative impact on environment and non-toxic end products.

 

Liquid-liquid extraction is mainly applied in purification procedures and can be produced in lab, pilot and full scale (20-120 MT).

Emulsions & Ointments

Normally, egg and soya lecithin are used for emulsion preparations in various industrial applications. Lipid Systems has developed extremely strong emulsifiers and unique droplet size characteristics based on oat and marine sources.

 Oat lecithin contains not only phosphorous based emulsifiers. The most potent found this far and to the expertise at Lipid Systems’ experience is galactolipids.

 

The galactolipids is self-assembling and forms very stable micelles. In addition to its emulsifying properties, oat lecithin also contains natural antioxidants, capable to protect end product from degradation.

 

The galactolipid based emulsions easily interacts with and penetrates the skin and serves as carriers for active ingredients.

 

The trend for dermal administration of active ingredients is very strong. The use of galactolipids will probably boost future applications.

Purification

Extremely pure lipid compositions and triglyceride oils have been developed by Lipid Systems Sweden AB. Special focus has been on those from marine sources containing Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.


Silicic acid purification is one of conventional methods but Lipid Systems has identified several other methods for improvement of quality characteristics and almost odorless and tasteless.


Odor and taste can also be neutralized by masking agents and resulting in tremendous improvements for applications in dietary supplements and functional foods.


The purification principles developed at Lipid Systems can also be used for isolation of specific molecules to near 100% purity.


Some crude fractions from extractions contain both non polar and polar lipids which can be separated and purified to active ingredients or excipients.
